Hundreds join in for historic Delta barn raising

Hundreds of volunteers in Delta, B.C. spent Sunday afternoon preserving a piece of agricultural history by participating in an old-fashioned barn raising that put together the Harris Barn that was built in 1900.

"This barn originally was a hay shed right on the Fraser River down on Tilbury (Island) at the end of Hopcott Road and my uncle bought it in 1940," Jim Harris said.

The building was later moved and the Harris family eventually sold the property. But when the Delta council recently learned the current land owner planned to tear it down, the members decided to move and save it instead.
