The Woodland Workshop is situated on a forested acreage within the Cowichan Valley on southern Vancouver Island. This innovative building consists of round logs and timbers that were harvested from the property, and will be enclosed by a straw bale wall system. The Woodland Workshop demonstrates a variety of green building concepts, and makes extensive use of local and recycled materials. Features of the design include: passive solar, a 2-chamber composting toilet system, innovative foundations that use bamboo reinforcement (instead of conventional metal re-bar), reclaimed thermal glazing units and salvaged roof tiles. All of the work including the structural log and timber frame that our team is building, is being done on site in the forest.
