Gord is the managing director of M&L and one of our senior project managers. He is a Journeyman carpenter with over 20 years experience of working with historic timber buildings, and he specializes in traditional timber-frame carpentry.

Gord has led his carpentry teams through a range of interesting and award-winning projects: from the restoration of medieval houses to the re-creation of a 30-ton Roman war machine for BBC Television; from the construction of a 10,000 square-foot timber space frame to support Europe's largest solar array. He has worked at locations as diverse as the equatorial jungles of Suriname, the uninhabited islands of the Outer Hebrides and the Ross Sea area of Antarctica.

Steve Lawrence

Steve Lawrence's Portrait

Steve is the production manager of M&L, and another one of our senior project managers. Steve apprenticed as a mechanical engineer and has worked extensively in forestry and as an arborist. He has been involved with timber framing for over 18 years now and has worked on and supervised a diverse range of projects from traditional timber frames to large and complex modern timber structures.

Steve's work at both Windsor Castle and Stirling Castle earned him a personal letter of thanks from HM Queen Elizabeth and HM Prince Phillip. Steve has planned and supervised hundreds of frame raisings from sheds and barns to complex castle roofs. He has a wealth of experience in timber conversion methods from sawmilling to hewing and pit sawing. Planning of complex lifting operations is one of his specialities and creative problem solving in general is where he gets his kicks. If it can be done, Steve will find the way to do it.

Steve has previously served as a director of the UK Carpenters Fellowship.

Steve lives on Vancouver Island, British Columbia with his partner of 24 years, Steph Waddington, and their three cats.

James has been in the log and timber business for more than 25 years; the first 15 years as a Journeyman Log Builder and Contractor, then pursuing the craft of timber framing.

James' solid background in all aspects of construction - from foundations to finishing, 100 sq. ft. to 10,000 sq. ft. and simple to complex - means he can take on any challenge in the shop or on site.

His pursuit of excellence in timber framing prompted James to move to Vancouver Island and join the team of M&L, whose business ethics and values fit well with his personal goals.

Rick is an integral, long term member of the M&L team. With over twenty five years of hands-on experience in construction, logging and fishing, Rick has seen it all before. He is truly a 'Jack of all trades'.

His common sense approach and his practical experience lets him tackle pretty much any task that we can throw at him.

In addition to working as a carpenter, Rick spends a great deal of his time working on various work sites lending his expertise whereever required and can usually be found anywhere we are doing heavy and complex machine assisted lifts.

Rick's interest in timber framing began early in 2007 when he worked with Olaf Gabriel on the construction of a small timber framed home at Shawnigan Lake. Since joining the company several years ago, he has worked on just about all of M&L's projects.

Lynn has found a home on Vancouver Island following an adventure-filled year of being a 'nomad' with her husband Jeff. Leaving the Ottawa Valley, a place where she called home for most of her adult life was not an easy decision and though she fondly remembers what she left behind, she also embraces all that British Columbia has to offer. One part of me wants to tell everyone how wonderful this place is, the other half wants it to remain one of those 'best kept secrets'.

When asked what is most important to her, Lynn will quickly reply, People and the quality of my surroundings! My personal goals include leaving everyone and everything I touch in better shape than when I first found them. Her goals extend out and beyond her personal life to include her professional side as well, there is no reason to settle for the status quo; each and every one of us has the ability to be outrageously great – I get really excited about helping others experience that.

Carrying with her a very diverse educational, experience and career background, Lynn works with both the staff of M&L as well as the company’s clients to ensure that their experience with the company exceeds all expectations. When she's not focusing on M&L priorities Lynn likes to expand her horizons; I love to learn, try new things, keep myself on my personal edge - indoors, outdoors, solo or with friends – it doesn’t matter…. The thrill is in the trying!

Heather joined M&L late in 2010, bringing with her a level of expertise and professionalism that complements the team in many ways but focuses primarily in the role of Controller – Bookkeeper. Born and raised in the Duncan area, Heather left the island to spend 18 years in Vancouver. Life and the island brought her back to the Cobble Hill area two years ago.

We asked Heather what gets her up in the morning and in her true nature, she replied, 'my alarm clock'. Her straight forward and dedicated attitude blends well with the values of M&L as she shares in the 'lead by example'.

When not diligently working with the finances of the company, Heather can be found spending time with her 'hubby' Kevin at the cabin in Port Renfrew, quadding and hanging out with her friends and dog. She very much appreciates the little things in life and while taking each day as it comes, continues to contribute to her personal growth and that of others. Ask her someday what P.A.L stands for and you'll learn a great deal more about her.

"I very much appreciate knowing that the company I work for is professional and knowledgeable' is what Heather says she likes most about working with the M&L team. We are all certainly very happy to have her with us.

Hailing originally from Winnipeg Manitoba, (there can’t be much winter weather wise that would discourage him) George and his partner Vanessa via Terrace BC arrived in Duncan 6 years ago.

When he’s not engaged as a highly experienced timber frame carpenter on M&L projects, George likes to spend his time gardening, playing guitar and piano and exploring Vancouver Island. Like many of the M&L team, he has placed great value on having the opportunity to live and work in one area, ‘I love the Cowichan Valley!’

When we asked George about what gets him up in the morning, he told us ‘I love to make something meaningful and beautiful. My passion is to develop a new insight into the meaning of life.’ His care and attention to detail can be felt and seen throughout the projects that he puts his hands to. The company values ring very true to George as he believes that all people have something to contribute and that by leading by example he can share his experience and knowledge with those within the company.

The one thing that George would like everyone to know is that he cares about ‘the quality of life’. ‘Working at M&L has helped me get back to a creative and fulfilling lifestyle’, which judging by the constant smile on his face suits him well. George has been with M&L from the very early stages and is often called on to sort out the ‘little things that make a big difference’, his understanding and knowledge is always appreciated by both team members and clients alike.

Stefan trained as a journeyman timber framer in Kassel, Germany and has constructed timber frames for 25 years. His experience includes both restoration and new projects. Stefan’s love of nature and horses prompted his move to Meadow Lake SK, where he worked a 500-acre cattle and horse ranch for three years.

Stefan was prompted to move further west for the opportunity to build log homes in British Columbia. A desire to return to traditional timber framing led Stefan to M&L in July 2008.

Living on south Vancouver Island means Stefan and his partner Linda can easily indulge their passion for the vast outdoors.

Born in Bergen Germany, Thomas made his way to Canada and settled in Victoria November 2006. He’s an accomplished Journeyman Carpenter who brings a unique set of skills to the Macdonald and Lawrence family.

Thomas believes that every individual has something to contribute and gives an example to illustrate: I have met and worked with so many people in my work life in different countries and from around the world. We all had different educations and experiences but we always learned from each other and supported one another.

When he’s not working with timber, Thomas likes to get outdoors; biking, hiking, camping and reading. He has plans of completing his Canadian grade 12 and building a family on Vancouver Island. Further studies for him may include architecture, structural engineering or management.

When he is not working with Macdonald and Lawrence, as a Journeyman Carpenter, Bill volunteers his time as a Crofton Volunteer Fire Fighter.

On site, Bill garners a great deal of respect from his team mates who often comment on ‘how safe they feel in his presence’. His time with M&L has had him working in new and different situations and he now adds ‘rope assist’ and working on top of the Kinsol Trestle to his resume.

Believing that each individual has something to contribute, Bill recognizes that it is the different contributions and attributes of individuals that supply the essence of a dynamic team. Bill comments; It’s a very good and proud feeling to be part of a team that all share a great pride and passion towards their work. I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to work on projects that have such value to the community and the people.

When asked what gets him up in the morning, Drew will tell you that he loves what he does as it allows him to focus on two of his passions, creating and building.

Drew spends his out of work time skateboarding and bushwhacking through the woods of the island and has been known to build the occasional tree fort. He’s also a print maker, artist and photographer. His immediate career plans include finishing his carpenter journeyman’s training.

Mark is a 'Red Seal' certified Canadian Journeyman Carpenter, with a StarCor Supervisors Certification in Construction Safety.  When he's not practising his trade with M&L, Mark enjoys spending time outdoors with his kids and partner; exploring the beaches of Tofino; tubing along the lazy shore of the Cowichan River and flying stunt kites along the windy beaches of Cherry Point. He also enjoys taking a day to play a round of golf with his friends. His partner Jennifer(Doc) operates "Doc the Barber" in Chemainus - Mark is proud to have designed and created an old fashion barbershop atmosphere with vintage style woodworking matched to the antiques.

Mark has a keen eye for detail and believes in creating buildings which can stand the test of time.  He approaches all builds as if they were for his own grandchildren to admire, and says, "that is the great reward of doing what I do". Mark enjoys the wonderful connections he has with past project owners, many whom he calls friends.  His love of Japanese architecture has grown over the years through the influences of a past employer who gave him a unique opportunity to work on a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired building.

Born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Rick relocated to the Cowichan Valley over 21 years ago. He moved about 5 years ago with his wife, Winona, and twin daughters, Hailey and Morgan, back to New Brunswick to tend to family business.  He couldn’t stay away though and recently returned to the Island and Shawnigan Lake, where they now make their home.

If panning for gold is something of interest, Rick has the experience.  When not at work on the Kinsol, he can be found panning for gold along with playing his guitar and generally spending time outdoors breathing in his surroundings.  He also has a keen interest in historical timberwork both buildings and structures – this is what brought him to M&L.

Rick describes himself as ‘a honest, hardworking family man’ who takes pride in his accomplishments.  Interestingly, he has worked on the world’s longest cover bridge in Hartland, New Brunswick.  Rick also has earned his Journeyman’s papers in Farrier and Blacksmithing which emphasizes his dream of life-long and advanced learning.

Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Jeff had made the Ottawa Valley in Ontario home for much of his life. After almost a year of international travel, he and his wife landed on Vancouver Island. Finding that it reminds him most of his beloved Northern Ontario, the decision was made to call the Island ‘home’.

Jeff enjoys exploring the back roads of Vancouver Island whenever he’s not working at M&L, doing a bit of fishing and taking in the great outdoors. Believing that every problem has a solution, Jeff is constantly looking for innovative and streamlined resolutions to the challenging puzzles of life. A little known fact about Jeff is that he loves to people watch and shop and has found a way to combine them both.

We asked Jeff how working at M&L had effected his life or outlook on work and he told us: It’s easy to respect your leadership when they apply the principles of hard work, ethics and leading by example with such broad strokes. The hands on approach of all members of the team allow crew moral to flourish and getting out of bed in the morning seems easier too.

Chris is a Residential Project Manager who believes that the creation of a home is a process that should be approached with great care and attention to detail. The end product should be one that showcases the client’s personality as well as the carpenters craftsmanship. “I think that we live in a great era for construction because we have the ability and the technology to build homes that will truly stand the test of time. What I love about building homes in this age of information is that I can combine new world technology with the old world craftsmanship."

After completing his degree in Construction Engineering in Ottawa, Chris decided to move to the west coast for “the mountains, the oceans, and the big trees”. Chris was attracted to Macdonald & Lawrence for their core values of craftsmanship and customer service. His ideal of a customer-first business model is truly upheld at Macdonald & Lawrence.

When Chris is not working he enjoys exploring the Cowichan Valley and the surrounding islands, either on his sail boat or hiking though the mountains. He also enjoys skiing in Whistler and white water canoeing whenever he gets a chance.

One of Mike’s more unusual goals is to build a frame entirely with hand tools from tree to welcome mat.
