When my husband, Neville, and I started researching building our dream cottage several years ago, we envisioned a place not only for ourselves, but for our kids, grandkids and even their kids. It will be a place we've dreamed of and saved for-the spot that enables us to reconnect with nature, ourselves and the most special people in our lives. But what to build? While I long for a whimsical cabin tucked into the woods, in my other moods I'm a fan of juxtaposing organic shapes and natural materials with streamlined, easyto- keep-clean, modern design.
It was at Buildex 2009 in Vancouver that stumbled across something I could love. I attended a seminar on building with big timbers presented by Randy Churchill of Macdonald & Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd. based in Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island.
